KNUST DIPPER Lab Hosts Ashesi Student to Explore IoT and Data Science for Real-World Applications.
Sedinam Aku Senaya, a Level 300 Computer Science student at Ashesi University, is gaining real world experience in cutting-edge technology through her internship at the Distributed IoT Platforms, Privacy, and Edge-Intelligence Research (DIPPER) Lab at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Joining the lab on June 9, 2025, Sedinam set out to broaden her knowledge in Internet of Things (IoT) systems and data analytics.
Her internship, which ends in August, has already made a lasting impact.
Today, she describes the experience as transformative.
“I joined the DIPPER Lab because I wanted to learn more about IoT and how to analyze data collected from sensors.
I’ve learned so much, especially how to work with sensors, microcontrollers, and new software tools.
Apart from IoT, I learned a lot about data analysis and how to use simple linear regression models. It’s been incredibly useful to apply these models to real datasets,” she shared.
Her internship offered a balanced mix of hardware and data work, allowing her to build not just technical skills, but also the confidence to apply them to real-world problems.
Despite initially feeling nervous in what she describes as a male-dominated environment, Sedinam quickly found her footing.
“It was a bit nerve-racking at first,” she admitted.
“But the people here are very approachable and friendly. It didn’t take long for me to feel comfortable and supported,” she added.
The DIPPER Lab at KNUST continues to offer young tech enthusiasts the opportunity to work on real-world problems using advanced technology and collaborative research.
