Erasmus exchange student presents AI research at DIPPER Lab
The DIPPER Lab at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has hosted an academic presentation by Erasmus exchange student, Marwan Haruna.
Marwan presented his research titled "Federated Maritime AI: Standards-Based Edge Deployment with oneM2M × ETSI MEC" to members of the DIPPER Lab team.
The presentation focused on the deployment of federated learning within a standardized edge computing architecture for maritime applications.
Marwan, a PhD student at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, Italy, recently completed a one-month Erasmus exchange programme at KNUST's Department of Computer Engineering.
During the presentation, he shared how federated learning can support maritime autonomous surface ships. He also discussed the role of artificial intelligence, edge computing and communication security in the maritime sector.
The session provided an opportunity for researchers at the laboratory to learn about emerging applications of AI in maritime operations.
Marwan also interacted with researchers at the lab and learned about several ongoing projects.
Explaining why he chose DIPPER Lab, Marwan said “the laboratory's work in IoT technologies and federated learning aligned with his research interests”.
The session brought together the Scientific Director of DIPPER Lab, Prof. Eric Tutu Tchao, Deputy Scientific Director, Dr. Andrew Selasi Agbemenu, Dr. Henry Nunoo-Mensah, Programs and Training Lead and Dr. Nana Kwadwo Akrasi-Mensah.
Reflecting on his stay at KNUST, Marwan said he enjoyed the campus environment and the opportunity to engage with students and researchers.
He expressed hope for stronger collaboration between KNUST and his home institution.
"I hope we can have more collaborations and more interactions with colleagues here at DIPPER Lab in the future," he said.
His visit forms part of efforts to promote international research collaboration and knowledge exchange between KNUST and partner institutions.
